GAINESVILLE - A Hall County fourth-grader who was suspended Thursday for taking what appeared to be a BB gun onto a school bus will be allowed to return to school Monday.
The nine-year-old was suspended after teachers learned from other students he had the gun on a bus earlier in the week.
School system spokesman Gordon Higgins says the Hall County School system launched an investigation with assistance from the Hall County Sheriff's Office into the plastic gun and discovered it was harmless.
"The item no longer had a trigger, it was no longer operable and it could not be loaded," Higgins said.
The student, from Riverbend Elementary School, will be allowed to return to school Monday but the suspension will remain on his record.
Higgins says the only difference is that his record will not show a weapons violation.
"Even though the gesture was essentially harmless is was something that caused a disruption," Higgins added.
He adds the boy seemed to realize he did something wrong and showed remorse at having caused a disruption.
Huggins says the gun came to light because the boy had made some modifications like gluing what resembled a gun scope to the top and wanted to show his friends.
Higgins says other students told a teacher about the gun.
