Lakeview girls making first trip to state tourney

HIAWASSEE - The Lakeview Academy girls basketball team earned its first-ever trip to the Class A state tournament with a 45-32 win over Prince Avenue Christian Tuesday night in the Region 8-A Tournament at the Towns County gym.

Lakeview will play Jefferson Friday at 7 p.m. at Towns County in the region semifinals. lakeview swept botg games against Jefferson during the regular season.

The Lady Lions (19-5) used its superior height and strength inside to wear down Prince Avenue. Chelsey Chastain poured in 25 points and grabbed 9 rebounds and had 5 steals while Christi Thomas scored 13 and pulled dwon 11 rebounds.

The sixth-ranked Lady Lions, however, did not get the quick start they were hoping for. They trailed 9-8 after the first quarter and fell down by three to the Lady Wolverines.

But they used a big run in the second quarter to run out to a 27-21 halftime lead. Lakeview took control in the third quarter holding Prince Avenue scoreless while building a 15-point lead.

In other Region 8-A Tournament action, 14th-ranked Towns County got by Athens Academy 39-37. Blair Barrett led the Lady Indians to the win with 29 points.

The No. 11 Jefferson girls whipped rival Commerce 51-36 behind 15 points from Shenita Moon to advance.

No. 2-ranked Social Circle hammered Rabun Gap 89-17.
