Lakeview teams go for more history in Region 8-A tourney

HIAWASSEE - Now that both the Lakeview Academy boys and girls basketball teams have qualified for their first-ever trips to the state tournament, what's next on the agenda?

Winning Region 8-A titles.

Both teams will have uphill fights as they resume the Region 8-A Tournament Friday night at Towns County High School.

The Lakeview boys (17-7) will play Athens Academy Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals at Towns County High School. The Lions lost to Athens Academy 37-27 during the regular season, their worst offensive output since coach Richie Hughes took over four years ago.

The Lady Lions (19-5) will play Jefferson Friday at 7 p.m. at Towns County in the region semifinals. Lakeview swept both games against the Lady Dragons during the regular season.


The Lakeview boys beat Athens Christian 61-58 in the opening round but blew a 10-point fourth quarter before winning in overtime. The Lions are led by Dustin Wellborn, Will Crumley and Trey Wood.

The No. 6-ranked Lady Lions got a 45-32 win over Prince Avenue Christian in the opening round to advance. Lakeview is the Region 8-A North champ while No. 11Jefferson finished second.
