HIAWASSEE - The Lakeview Academy boys basketball team, making its first-ever Class A state tournament appearance wasn't given much of a chance against No. 2-ranked Landmark Christian Saturday night.
But for three quarters the Lions pushed the War Eagles to the limit. Unfortunately, they wore down in the fourth quarter of a 77-60 loss.
Landmark (21-8) outscored Lakeview 24-13 in the final period to pull away.
"We gave it all we had," Lakeview coach Richie Hughes said. "I don't think we could've played any harder or better. (Landmark) is just a tremendous team."
Lakeview (18-9) cut a 10-point first quarter lead to 31-27 by halftime and trailed just 53-47 heading into the fourth quarter. But the smaller Lions were no match for the duo of Randolph Morris and Justin Holland.
Morris, considered one of the top recruits in Georgia, finished with 29 points and Holland 28 to lead the War Eagles.
J.B. Little played perhaps his best game of the year leading Lakeview with 25 points. Dustin Wellborn and Will Crumley each added 14 for the Lions.
Despite the loss, Hughes said this group has opened some eyes to the Lakeview program.
"This was a great group to work with. I could not have asked for anything more from them. They achieved more with less than any team I've had. I'm very, very proud of them," he said.
