Lumpkin voters facing longest ballot in the area

By by Ken Stanford
DAHLONEGA - Lumpkin County voters will face the longest ballot of any in the immediate Gainesville area Tuesday and some will be voting on a liquor-by-the-drink question.

The county is converting to a five-member board of commissioners next year and the races for those posts have attracted the largest number of candidates. A slew of candidates made a run for the posts originally, but the summer primaries whittled that number to eight - two for each of the posts.

Meanwhile, Steve Gooch, the current sole commissioner, is unopposed, however, for county commission chairman.

In addition, there are contested races for county coroner, sheriff, and court clerk; the state Senate; and, Congress that will be on the Lumpkin County ballot.

And, those Lumpkin countians living in the city of Dahlonega will be asked whether they want to legalize the sale of liquor-by-the-drink.
