GAINESVILLE - Practice began Friday morning at the rowing venue on Lake Lanier for this year's Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta.

About 5,000 athletes from more than 140 schools, universities and rowing clubs are in town for the two-day event at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center, hosted by the Lake Lanier Rowing Club.

Organizers say it will be the second-largest event of its kind in the country. In addition to 5,000 athletes, about 1,000 spectators are expected.

Races will be run Saturday and Sunday on a 5,000-meter, or 3.1-mile, course, starting north of the venue and ending at the Olympic finish tower.

Competitors start at 10-30 second intervals and they race each other indirectly against the clock.

Races are scheduled 8:15-4:30 Saturday and 9:30-11:15 Sunday.

The public boat ramp at Clarks Bridge was closed Friday and will remain closed through Sunday. In addition, public boat traffic will be controlled through Sunday along the race course to 1,000 meters south of the venue.
