North falls to South in GACA All-Star game

By By Jeff Hart
COLUMBUS - South Effingham's Patrick Bolen booted a 42-yard field goal with 1:05 left as his team rallied Tuesday for a 10-7 victory over the North in the GACA North-South Classic all-star game.

The South tied the game on the third play of the fourth quarter when quarterback Ferlandocq Williams of Northside-Warner Robins hit Derrell Stegall of Newnan, who caught the ball at the 20 and ran untouched into the end zone to complete a 61-yard play. Bolen added the PAT.

The North went up 7-0 after its initial drive bogged down and a punt put the South on its 8-yard line.

Following brown's score, Gainesville's Will Williams kicked the extra point.

Gainesville's David Menocal also played in the game on the offensive line.

Williams handled the punting and kick-off and field goal duties.

"I think both are deserving. They've had good careers and this is a nice to finish off their playing time at Gainesville," Gainesville High Athletics Director Wayne Vickery said.

Receiver Ryan Wood also played for Buford.

The one missing Buford player is AP Player of the Year Darius Walker, who pulled out of the game with an injury.

Walker set the all-time Georgia record for touchdowns in a season this year with 46. He broke the old record held by Charles Grant and Herschel Walker with a score in the Class AA title game against Charlton County.

Linebacker Jae Thaxton from Hart County was the only other northeast Georgia player to be named to the North squad.
