STONE MOUNTAIN - Robert Woodell, one of Georgia's all-time winningest high school basketball coaches, passed away Wednesday from an embolism at his Stone Mountain home.
Woodell coached for more than 30 years, including a stint at Riverside Military Academy in the mid-1990s.
Woodell, who racked up 1,067 wins - fifth all-time in Georgia - was known for his fiery sideline antics during a game.
Flowery Branch girls basketball coach Angela Middleton worked with Woodell at the No. 1 Basketball Camp each summer at Brenau University.
"He knew the game and coached this past summer at the camp," Middleton said. "He was hilarious and his basketball stories could entertain you for hours. he will be missed by everyone."
Woodell taught at Riverside Military Academy from 1986 until 2001 and coached the basketball team on two different occassions.
Services will be Friday in Rome at the gymnasium of Cave Spring High School, where he complied most of his wins.
