Humphrey leads Lady Elephants past rival Fannin

GAINESVILLE - In most years when the Gainesville and Fannin County girls basketball teams meet, it would be a marquee matchup.

That wasn't the case Saturday night, as the Class AAA No. 1-ranked Lady Red Elephants stomped all over the Lady Rebels in a 62-41 win at home.

Gainesville (15-3) jumped on Fannin (15-4) early running out to a 20-3 lead after the first quarter. They led 30-14 at halftime and maintained a 16 to 20 point lead for most of the second half to never let the Lady Rebels in it.

Gainesville has now won five straight since losing to Johnson in the semifinals of the Lanierland Tournament last month.

"I wasn't happy the way we played any game at Lanierland," coach Manson Hill said. "We've made a conscious effort to improve our practices, and our defense during games in particular. I like the way we're playing now."

Gainesville held Fannin's leading scorer Stephanie Scearce to just 9 points. She had torched both Chestatee and Gilmer earlier in the week with 20-plus points in both games. Melissa Roberts led Fannin with 15 points.

Tasha Humphrey is back to her early-season form leading Gainesville with 24 points. Meg Henson added 12 and Kita Waller 9 for the Lady Elephants.

Gainesville will travel to No. 3 Johnson Tuesday in a key Region 7-AAA South showdown.
