GAINESVILLE - The game plan Tuesday night for the Lakeview Academy girls basketball team was to try and get the ball inside against a smaller Jefferson team.
The Lady Lions executed it to near-perfection getting 50 points from its frontcourt in a 62-55 win over the Lady Dragons in a critical Region 8-A North game at home.
Both teams came into the game ranked ninth in the latest Class A poll.
Chelsey Chastain hit 13-of-18 shots to lead Lakeview (13-4, 6-1) with 28 points, most coming from within six-feet of the basket.
Christi Thomas added 13, all from close range, and several other Lady Lions were able to take advantage of missmatches inside. Hillary Stanford provided the outside threat hitting three 3-pointers and finishing with 12 points for Lakeview.
"That was the plan and the guards just did a great job of getting the ball inside," Chastain said. "We were able to get some early shots to go in and that helped us get going."
Chastain scored the first six points of the game but Jefferson (11-8, 3-2) stormed back to tie it at 8-8 and led just once, 13-12. The Lady Dragons would not get closer than one point the rest of the way.
Lakeview went on a 10-1 run and finished the first half with a 27-20 lead and then used a 10-2 run early in the third quarter to run out to a 37-26 lead.
Jefferson, however, answered with a 16-6 run to pull within 43-42 on a jumper from Reanna Bray. Lakeview used a 9-1 run to pull away and then held on down the stretch.
Jefferson was led by Shenita Moon with 18 points. Shalita Brooks added 12 and Bray finished with 10.
