Vikings rally to beat arch-rival Gainesville

By By Jeff Hart
GAINESVILLE - The third time was not the charm for the Class AAA ninth-ranked Gainesville boys basketball team against arch-rival and No. 1 East Hall Tuesday night.

The Vikings rallied from an early deficit behind the shooting of Frank Davis to take a 76-62 Region 7-AAA South win over the Red Elephants at the Gainesville High gym.

In the girls game, the Gainesville girls jumped on the Lady Vikings early and cruised to a 66-36 win.

The East Hall boys (19-2, 6-0) outscored the Red Elephants (17-6, 4-2) 26-14 in the second quarter to erase an 18-11 Gainesville lead.

The Vikings blew the game open in the third with a 12-2 run on four consecutive 3-pointers by Davis and took a 60-47 lead into the fourth quarter.

Keldrick Coleman kept a cold-shooting East Hall team in the game early dominating Gainesville on the inside. He finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Gainesville's Brent Benson was held to 20 points and no other Red Elephant scored in double figures. Jon Mark Owings and Jeremy Little each finish with 7 points.

The Vikings face a tough weekend with road games at No. 14 Johnson on Friday and streaking North Hall, which has seven straight, on Saturday.

Gainesville plays host to Flowery Branch on Friday and travels to Westminster Saturday.
