Once a hotbed for area wrestling, Hall County teams are in danger of missing out on the state tournament for a second year unless someone can break through the Grayson and Gilmer headlock on Area 3.
The Area 3 Dual Meet Tournament gets under way Friday at Pickens County with just the top two teams moving on the Class AAA state meet next week in Macon.
The double-elimination tournament will conclude on Saturday.
Gilmer won the Area 3 tournament last year with Grayson taking second.
Gilmer is ranked sixth in Class AAA and Grayson is seventh. No Hall County teams are ranked.
Gainesville and Chestatee have had the most success this season at various area tournaments and are the county's best chance of grabbing a state tournament spot.
The Red Elephants had been ranked in Class AAA most of the season before dropping out of the poll for the first time this week.
