Benson sparks GHS rally over Falcons

By By Jeff Hart
GAINESVILLE - With just over a minute to go and leading Gainesville 68-65, the Flowery Branch boys basketball team looked to be on the cusp of its biggest win ever.

But Brent Benson, Hall County's leading scorer, would have none of it. The senior guard drilled a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left to cap an 8-0 run to give the Red Elephants a wild 73-68 win.

Benson finished with 36 points - his 11th game with 30 or more this season. He was the only Gainesville (18-6, 5-2 in Region 7-AAA South) player in double figures.

Freshman Zac Swansey led the Falcons (9-12, 1-5) with 22 points. Justin Heilman and Josh Sneed finished with 13 apiece for Flowery Branch.

The game was a battle throughout with Gainesville leading 35-34 at halftime and the Falcons coming back to tie the game at 51-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

The five-point finish was the biggest lead got either team in the second half.
