Owings to sign with Clemson

By By Jeff Hart
GAINESVILLE - Bucking family tradition, Gainesville High baseball star Jon Mark Owings announced Friday he has decided to sign a letter of intent to play at Clemson.

It should make for some interesting family get-togethers. His brother Micah plays for Georgia Tech, and his father played at Tech as well.

Gainesville coach Wayne Vickery said Jon Mark he wanted to carve his own nitch.

"I think that he felt it would be better (at Clemson) and not have to follow in his brother's footsteps and make a name for himself," Vickery said. "Either way, it would have been a good choice."

Owings is projected as an outfielder at Clemson. The Tigers finished 39-22 last year, losing in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Vickey said more than a dozen schools were looking at him.

"There were numerous, numerous schools looking at him, but it came down to Tech and Clemson. I told him to make his own choice and that we were behind him no matter where he went," Vickery said.
