Buford defense goes for third straight shutout

By By Jeff Hart
BUFORD - There's no truth to the rumor that Banks County football players have been seen in Gwinnett County handing out flyers promoting the Oct. 3 game between Buford and Greater Atlanta Christian.

You see, the Leopards are hoping Buford forgets to show up in Homer for the two teams' Region 8-AA game Friday night.

But Buford coach Dexter Wood said he knows all about Banks and what they're capable of.

"Banks runs a spread offense and likes to throw the ball and it's something we don't see much, so it's a new wrinkle for us," Wood said. "It'll be a good challenge to our defense."

At this point, any challenge would be the first one. The first field goal against the Class AA No. 1-ranked Wolves (2-0, 1-0) would be a breakthrough for anyone.

Buford's vaunted defense has yet to yield a point in 2003 and has given up barely 150 yards of total offense combined in its first two games.

"They have been playing well, but this week we'll see how good we really are," Buford coach Dexter Wood said.

The Leopards (1-2, 0-1) opened the season strong blowing out Oglethorpe County 50-14. But they have dropped their last two games to Class A No. 3-ranked Commerce and region foe Wesleyan allowing 76 points. Both teams went deep into the playoffs last year.

The Class AA defending champion Wolves come into the game averaging 48.5 points a game.

"We don't look past anyone because you can't in this region or any other region. We've got goals and that means we have to be focused on the game that week. This is a region game so it's a big one."

Banks may see some light at the other end of the toughest stretch of their schedule. After Buford, Banks plays at Apalachee, then comes home against Dawson County and then hits the road again against Rabun County. Those three teams are a combined 2-7 heading into Friday night's games.
