Red Devils tame Tigers

By From staff reports
HAWKINSVILLE - Dennis Wilder had his usualy good game for the Commerce High football team.

The problem was that there was little else to go right for the Tigers in a 25-6 loss to Hawkinsville in the Class A state quarterfinals.

Wilder finished with 141 yards and the only touchdown for Commerce, which came in averaging 37 points a game while winning eight straight.

Wilder's score came on a 64-yard run on the Tigers' first possession but the Tigers, who outgained Hawkinsville on the ground, could not convert on critical third downs.

The Red Devils (13-0) will now move on to the Georgia Dome to play the winner of the Clinch County/Landmark Christian game in the semifinals next week.

Commerce coach Steve Savage said earlier in the week they could let sophomore running back Jeremy Marshall run free in the secondary. Marshall scored twice and Hawkinsville got two TD passes from quarterback Todd Coley.

The Tigers were trying to make their first trip to the Dome since winning the Class A title in 2000.
