Elephants give up late lead in loss to C. Gwinnett

By From staff reports
LAWRENCEVILLE - Gainesville boys basketball coach Jerry Davis wanted to take the first few games of the season to find out what he has.

Despite a 69-64 loss to Central Gwinnett Saturday night in the Red Elephants' season-opener, Davis had to like what he saw.

Gainesville took a lead against the Class AAAAA Black Knights into the final minute before succombing.

Brent Benson poured in a game-high 32 points for the Red Elephants, who next will play against Jackson County in the Jefferson Tournament next week.

It was the first game behind the bench for Davis, who "retired" three years ago after 23 years at the school. He decided to come back at the end of last season when Virgil Amey, who replaced Davis, left to go into administration.
