Fick fined by commissioner's office

By
ATLANTA - Braves first baseman Robert Fick was fined by the commissioner's office Sunday for his actions at Game 4 of Atlanta's NL playoff series against the Chicago Cubs.

Fick clubbed Chicago's Eric Karros with a forearm as he was running to first base Saturday at Wrigley Field. The blow knocked the ball and glove free, nearly injuring Karros, and Fick was called out.

"It's an elimination game and you've got to do what you've got to do," Fick said in a profanity-laced explanation. "I'm not saying I did it on purpose. But it's ... baseball."

The amount of the fine was not disclosed by Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline.
