GAINESVILLE - It was something Chestatee High girls softball player Brooke Puckett had dreamed about all her life.
Wednesday, it came true as the senior signed a letter of intent to play for North Georgia College in Dahlonega
"All I ever wanted to do since I was nine was sign a scholarship to play softball," Puckett said. "I can't believe it actually happened. But I've worked hard to get here and my teammates have been a big help pushing me."
Puckett is the first girl varsity player in the brief two-year history of Chestatee to sign a scholarship.
Chestatee coach Devin Thomas, who has coached Puckett since the eighth-grade, said it was a deserving end.
"She has always done anything she could to improve herself. It's a testiment to how hard she works," Thomas said.
Puckett is projected as a starter on the middle infield for the Lady Saints, who finished 15th in the nation last year in the NAIA and a perfect 20-oh in the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Association.
Saints coach Mike Davenport said they have been looking at Puckett for a couple of years.
"The first time I saw her I knew she would turn out to be a great player. She's gotten better and we expect her to be a tremendous asset to our program," Davenport said. "She'll play mostly in the infield but I see her probably playing some outfield. That's a big hole we need to fill. but she's versatile enough to do it."
Puckett helped lead the Lady War Eagles to a region championship in their first season and another solid year in 2003 as a shortstop and pitcher.
