BUFORD - Buford coach Dexter Wood is a tough man to please. Or maybe he's just trying to get the most out his talented football teams.
Whatever the case, he was pleased last week even after the Class AA No. 1-ranked Wolves came from behind to beat Lupkin County on the road.
"We're a distracted team. I don't know if it's the signings and scouts or if they're just looking ahead at playing for another title or what. But if we want to have another chance (at a title) we're going to have to get back to playing Buford football," he said.
That doesn't sound good for Union County, which travels to Buford for a Region 8-AA battle.
Buford (5-0, 4-0) is averaging 37 points a game and has given up just 9 points (only 7 against its vaunted) defense all year. If that's not Buford football, what is it Wood is looking for?
"We're not finishing drives in the red zone. We making mistakes and committing penalties at bad times - things you can't do against the great teams," Wood said.
Union (1-4, 0-3) features a wing-T offense and had averaged 23 points a game over the previous three games before a 40-7 loss last week to Wesleyan.
The Wolves need a win to keep pace with Wesleyan (5-1, 4-0) to set up a showdown between the two teams for first place in the region next week in Norcross.
