GAINESVILLE - As Larry Munson would say, it looked like Old Lady Luck was smiling on the Chestatee football team Friday night against West Hall.
The War Eagles blocked a West Hall field goal that would have won the game with 1:30 left and then watched as another field goal attempt with 30 seconds left hit an upright and bounced out.
But in the end, luck ran out on Chestatee as West Hall escaped with a 31-24 Region 7-AAA win in double overtime.
Devin Snapp scored on a 15-yard run on the first play of the second overtime to give West Hall (4-3, 4-3) the lead. The Spartan defense then forced a Chestatee fumble at the 3 in its chance in the second overtime to preserve the win.
Chestatee (0-6, 0-6) looked like it was headed for its first win of the year and snap a 14-game losing streak. The War Eagles led 10-0 and 17-7 before taking a 17-10 lead into halftime.
But West Hall got going when Mike Burgamy rambled 50-yards to tie the game on the opening drive of the second half.
It stayed that way until overtime.
In the first overtime, Chestatee's Brandon Myers ran 4-yards for a 24-17 lead. but West Hall answered tying the game on its overtime possession.
Burgamy also had a 68-yard scoring run for West Hall in the first half to get the Spartans back in the game after trailing 10-0.
The win kept West Hall alive in the race for the final playoff spot. The Spartans are tied with East Hall but must finish ahead of the Vikings outright to get the fourth spot by virtue of East Hall's win over the Spartans two weeks ago.
