In Michigan, presidential hopeful Joe Lieberman thanked hundreds of volunteers at a rally for engaging in community service in honor of the slain civil rights leader, who he called a ``modern-day Moses.'' <br>

The Democratic senator from Connecticut spoke at a rally in Detroit before volunteers headed out to various community projects. <br>

In North Carolina, U.S. Senator John Edwards, also a Democratic presidential hopeful, called on Southerners to continue to lead the civil rights movement. <br>

From marches to speeches to the unveiling of a sculpture of King, residents in Nebraska also celebrated Monday's holiday. <br>
<br>
And in Alabama, Governor-elect Bob Riley spoke from the same pulpit where King ignited the civil rights movement nearly a half-century ago.
