In celebrations large and small, people in states across the country are honoring the memory of the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior Monday.
In Michigan, presidential hopeful Joe Lieberman thanked hundreds of volunteers at a rally for engaging in community service in honor of the slain civil rights leader, who he called a ``modern-day Moses.''
The Democratic senator from Connecticut spoke at a rally in Detroit before volunteers headed out to various community projects.
In North Carolina, U.S. Senator John Edwards, also a Democratic presidential hopeful, called on Southerners to continue to lead the civil rights movement.
From marches to speeches to the unveiling of a sculpture of King, residents in Nebraska also celebrated Monday's holiday.
And in Alabama, Governor-elect Bob Riley spoke from the same pulpit where King ignited the civil rights movement nearly a half-century ago.
