It was a mixed bag for first-time unemployment insurance claims in September in Gainesville and the rest of Georgia.
Compared to last month, applications in Gainesville were up 4.1 percent but compared to a year ago they were down 20.5 percent, according to state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. Statewide, the report was similar - down 2.2. percent from August and up 2.3 percent compared to a year ago.
Six of 14 metropolitan areas in Georgia reported decreases in the number of applications over the month, while 10 of 14 reported increases compared to a year ago.
