LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy suffered skull and facial fractures while trying to serve a warrant to an 18-year-old woman.
Authorities say the woman's 21-year-old boyfriend, Erik Michael Wallis, struck the deputy as the couple tried to flee last night.
Sheriff Butch Conway says the deputy approached the couple as they pulled up to a house about 7 p.m. Conway said that's when "some kind of altercation took place between him and the boyfriend."
The deputy shot Wallis once in the upper body as the man drove off. He was undergoing surgery at the Gwinnett County Medical Center late last night.
The car was found a few blocks away with Wallis slumped in the driver's seat. The woman was taken to jail.
Conway says the 41-year-old deputy, whose name was not released, has been with the department for seven years.
Conway said Thursday's incident is the second time in two days that Gwinnett deputies were attacked while serving warrants.
On Wednesday, a man came at two deputies with a knife when they attempted to serve him a warrant in Sugar Hill. Both the man and the deputies were injured in the altercation.
