Gwinnett deputy seriously injured while serving warrant

LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County sheriff&#39;s deputy suffered skull and facial fractures while trying to serve a warrant to an 18-year-old woman. <br> <br> Authorities say the woman&#39;s 21-year-old boyfriend, Erik Michael Wallis, struck the deputy as the couple tried to flee last night. <br> <br> Sheriff Butch Conway says the deputy approached the couple as they pulled up to a house about 7 p.m. Conway said that&#39;s when &#34;some kind of altercation took place between him and the boyfriend.&#34; <br> <br> The deputy shot Wallis once in the upper body as the man drove off. He was undergoing surgery at the Gwinnett County Medical Center late last night. <br> <br> The car was found a few blocks away with Wallis slumped in the driver&#39;s seat. The woman was taken to jail. <br> <br> Conway says the 41-year-old deputy, whose name was not released, has been with the department for seven years. <br> <br> Conway said Thursday&#39;s incident is the second time in two days that Gwinnett deputies were attacked while serving warrants.<br> <br> On Wednesday, a man came at two deputies with a knife when they attempted to serve him a warrant in Sugar Hill. Both the man and the deputies were injured in the altercation.
