POOLER - Georgia is competing with Charleston, South Carolina, to become the home of a new DaimlerChrysler van plant.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports in today's editions that executives with DaimlerChrysler AG have met with Governor Barnes and the commissioner of the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism - R.K. Sehgal - to discuss bringing the plant to Pooler, west of Savannah.
The newspaper reports that DaimlerChrysler attorneys and state lawyers have met to discuss specifics of a 1,500-acre tract the state is offering. It says DaimlerChrysler has eliminated Jacksonville, Florida, as a potential site for the plant.
The $700 million plant would employ about three-thousand and produce cargo vans.
In South Carolina, a state panel has agreed to spend $2.5 million as an incentive to DaimlerChrysler to build the plant in Charleston.
