HOUSTON - The Atlanta Braves placed infielder Wes Helms on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a sprained right thumb.<br>

Helms, who was injured Friday night, was batting .249 with six home runs and 22 RBIs. The Braves recalled Marcus Giles from Triple-A Richmond, and he was with the team for Sunday's game against the Houston Astros.<br>

Giles began the season as Atlanta's starting second baseman, but went on the disabled list May 28 with a sprained right ankle.<br>
<br>
In 42 games with the Braves this season, Giles hit .237 with five homers and 12 RBIs. He was batting .322 at Richmond while seeing action at third base.<br>
<br>
Atlanta has a major league-best 77-40 record.<br>
