Gracewood head reassigned

AUGUSTA - The head of Gracewood State School and Hospital has been reassigned after state and federal surveys threatened to curtail funding for the institution for the developmentally disabled. <br> <br> Chief executive Bruce Callander was assigned to hospital operations within the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases in Atlanta, said Debra L. Elovich of the Georgia Department of Human Resources. <br> <br> Gracewood clinical director Gail Jackson will serve as the interim head of Gracewood, Elovich said Friday. <br> <br> A survey team for the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services threatened to cut off Medicare funding in June after finding a patient with a broken wrist who was tackled by a staff member. <br> <br> Last month, after federal surveyors were convinced that the danger to patients had been corrected, a separate state survey found an ``immediate jeopardy&#39;&#39; to patients. <br> <br> <br> This included a patient beaten with an aluminum pipe by a staff member and a patient who broke his neck after he jumped out a window because he wasn&#39;t being closely watched.
