ACC schools literally rebuilding football programs

PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA - A survey of Atlantic Coast Conference schools shows the nine schools have spent a half billion dollars on football facilities in the last five years. <br> <br> The Charlotte Observer survey says that figure amounts to the gross national product of American Samoa. <br> <br> The figure includes North Carolina State&#39;s $100 million expenditure to build a field house and expand Carter-Finley Stadium. <br> <br> Georgia Tech is undertaking a $70 million upgrade to Bobby Dodd Stadium. Two years ago, Virginia showed off the new Scott Stadium, which grew from 45,000 seats to more than 61,000. That cost $86 million. <br> <br> Duke has just spent $22 million for its new field house. <br> <br> Outgoing NCAA President Cedric Dempsey has publicly decried what he calls college football&#39;s ``arms race.&#39;&#39; While ACC Commissioner John Swofford is preaching caution, he says nothing can be done to stop it.
