GAINESIVILLE - As part of a joint investigation with the GBI and Hall County Sheriff's Office, an arrest has been made in connection to a skull that was found in September.

Arrested is Johnny Sunrise Carter, 20, Bear Creek Road, Lula. He is charged with the murder of Wilmont "Monty" Tidd, 50, of Banks County.

Carter is being held without bond in the Hall County Detention Center and is charged with one count of malice murder, aggravated battery, concealing a death and making a false statement.

"We know there was an altercation and weapons were used," says sheriff's Major Wayne Mock. "We have recovered some weapons, but will not comment on that."

He adds investigators are confident they know how Tidd died.

Tidd's skull was found in a wooded are near Oliver Road on September 27. Other parts of his skeleton were found in a drained lake nearby.

Assisting in the investigation are GBI forensic anthropologists. They are continuing the examination of the skeleton.

Tidd was reported missing in December 2001 and was last seen alive near the area where his skeleton was found. He had been dropped off at a job site.

Until the skull was found, Tidd's case was treated as a missing persons case by Hall County Sheriff's detectives.

Mock says Tidd had been a short term resident of Banks County before he disappeared.
