MCDONOUGH - A Henry County teacher was indicted Wednesday on charges that he took nearly $35,000 from the county affiliate of the Georgia Association of Educators.
Jerome Amis is accused of taking the money from the union treasury over a three-year period while he was the affiliate's president. Accountants for the GAE noticed irregularities and referred them to the district attorney's office. Amis stepped down from the position about two weeks ago.
Amis, a social studies teacher at Henry County High School, has been a member of the McDonough City Council since 1986. He taught in the county school system for 24 years.
Officials said it was too soon to say whether Amis will continue teaching.
