Open house at new minor league stadium in Rome on Sunday

By
ROME - An open house will be held Sunday at the new minor league baseball stadium in Rome, a building that could be completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

Floyd County Commission Chairman Garry Fricks said the project is expected to come in about $1 million under the projected cost of $15.8 million. The stadium will be the home of the new Rome Braves, a Class A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.

Opening day next season is April 11.

The stadium was financed by a one-cent, 15-month special purpose, local option sales tax. Since the stadium might be cheaper than expected, Fricks said the county is thinking of spending money for items that were taken out of the budget, like $40,000 for playground equipment and $50,000 for a statue at the front entrance.

The two-hour walkthrough starts at 2 p.m. Sunday.

``People are curious and we want them to see what's going on,'' Fricks said.
