Braves to open Spring Training on Feb. 28

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves on Monday said their 2002 spring training schedule will begin on Feb. 28 against the University of Georgia and conclude against the Minnesota Twins on March 30 at Turner Field.

Braves pitchers and catchers report to their Kissimmee spring training site on Feb. 14. Position players report Feb. 19 with the first full-squad workout scheduled for Feb. 20.

The Braves have had a quiet off-season signing no major free agents. They did, however, lock up John Smoltz as their closer and resign Gold Glove centerfielder Andruw Jones to a long-term contract.

The other major move was signing third baseman Vinnie Castillo and then moving Chipper Jones to left field.
