Musselwhite: Audit needed for Development Authority

By By Jeff Hart
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Councilman Mark Musselwhite Thursday called for an audit of the Gainesville Non-Profit Development Authority.

Musselwhite, during a council discussion of 2002 goals, said the authority has "too much money and power" and needs to be more closely monitored.

"Not that I think anything is wrong, I just want to know how the money they get is being used," he said.

His comments stem from a failed attempt by the authority to build work force housing off of Athens Highway last year. Residents from the area successfully blocked the development.

The authority had bought 231 acres for around $1 million and Musselwhite wanted to know where the authority got the money.

"First, I dont think the city really needs to be in the (housing developemnt) business. But, more improtantly, I want to know where a non-profit organization gets assests of $1 million to buy something like that," Musselwhite said.

Fellow councilman George Wangemann, however, said the city needs more affordable housing for new workers coming into the area.

"There are a lot of people moving into the city that need more affordable housing. I think that if the city can help provide that we should," Wangemann said.
