NGHS announces milestone of treatments completed

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) recently hit a milestone for treatments completed.

On Thursday, NGHS announced they have completed over 100 histotripsy procedures.

Histotripsy is an ultrasound-guided technology that uses high-intensity sound waves to break down targeted tissue like liver tumors without surgery or radiation.

In April of 2024, NGHS announced they completed the first histotripsy procedure in the state, and at the time said they were one of eight hospitals in the world to offer it.

They are still the only hospital in the state to offer the treatment, and nearly a year-and-a-half later have completed over 100 of them.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of this revolutionary technology,” Northeast Georgia Physicians Group (NGPG) surgeon Nelson Royall, MD, said. “Being the only hospital in Georgia offering histotripsy means we can provide patients with access to a minimally invasive alternative that delivers exceptional results with fewer side effects.”

NGHS is also the first in the world to offer a clinical trial for histotripsy, known as BOOMBOX.

“Completing more than 100 histotripsy procedures is proof that patients are looking for this type of treatment, and some are traveling from as far away as Nevada for care,” Terence Jackson, MD, a surgeon with NGPG, said. “We are excited to continue expanding its use, providing more patients with an option that potentially improves outcomes while minimizing disruption to their lives and current treatments.”
