Jackson EMC offers tips on to save money and stay cool this summer

By Jeremiah McBurrows Jr.

Jackson EMC released tips on how to save energy over the summer and beat the heat responsibly.

Electricity use can rise suddenly in the summer with hotter temperatures, longer days and more time inside.

These simple tips promote efficient energy use while maintaining comfortability.

Keep clear and consistent airflow around your A/C units by keeping your plants and shrubs trimmed. This makes sure the unit is always being fed a healthy flow of air to blast into the home, along with lowering energy costs by not making the unit work as hard to cool the house.

Among tips to keep the house cool, keep the thermostat at a constant temperature even when leaving the house. It costs more energy to turn it on and off than keeping it consistent. Keep in mind that each degree below 78 can increase cooling costs by 5%. Water heaters should also be set to 120 degrees for maximized energy efficiency.

Electronics that have sleep or power-saving modes should be placed on those settings while on stand-by, if not unplugged. Dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers work should be used at full capacity and in the early morning/late evening hours.
