The City of Cumming has released the name of the employee who was killed after being struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of the city water facilities.
City officials said Crystal Sawyer, 44, was an Inventory Clerk in the Cumming Utilities Distribution and Collection Division.
Sawyer's name was withheld to give her family some time to grieve privately.
“As we stated on Monday, everyone at the City of Cumming is completely devastated following this horrible accident,” City Administrator Phil Higgins said. “But we are now prepared to release the name of the beloved City of Cumming employee whose life was tragically cut short during Monday’s tragedy.”
Sawyer was employed in September of 2020, in the Utilities Billing Division at City Hall.
In June of 2023, she transferred to the Utilities Distribution and Collection Division headquarters on Dahlonega Highway.
“Crystal was a treasured City of Cumming employee with a bubbly, outgoing personality who made everyone she encountered feel welcome,” Higgins said. “She also had a very fun sense of humor and kept her co-workers laughing. She was a hard worker who was loved by all her supervisors and coworkers.”
Sawyer’s family has made funeral arrangements with McDonald & Son Funeral Home in Cumming. Her obituary can be read here.
“In addition to her work life, Crystal was a wonderful wife and mother, beloved daughter, sister, and friend to so many,” Higgins said. “I cannot stress enough how completely heartbroken everyone at the City of Cumming is following Crystal’s passing. We are all keeping her family in our prayers as they navigate these very difficult days.”
In honor of Sawyer, flags at all City facilities will be flown at half-staff from end-of-day Friday, March 14, through Friday, March 21.
