Georgia men open SEC Tourney against Oklahoma

By AccessWDUN Staff

The Georgia Bulldogs face the Oklahoma Sooners in the SEC Tournament. Wednesday's game will be the second meeting this season between the two teams. The Bulldogs won the previous matchup 72-62. Georgia is 8-10 against the SEC, and Oklahoma is 6-12 against the SEC. Tip-off is set for 9:30 p.m. ET in Nashville, Tenn.

Georgia is 20-11, reaching the 20-win mark during the regular season for just the sixth time in 119 seasons (along with 1931, 1986, 1997, 2011 and 2015). The Bulldogs also secured their second-straight 20-win effort, marking the fifth back-to-back 20-win campaigns for UGA.

Those accomplishments have Georgia poised to earn its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2015. The Bulldogs are featured in all 103 projections tracked by bracketmatrix.com, including a No. 10 seed by ESPN's Joe Lunardi.

The Bulldogs' balanced offense features seven players who have led Georgia in scoring in one or more games.

Freshman Asa Newell, who was named to the SEC's All-Freshman team on Monday, paces the Bulldogs both in scoring at 15.1 ppg and on the boards at 6.5 rpg. Among SEC leaders, Newell is No. 16 in scoring, No. 13 rebounding, No. 3 in field goal percentage (.540), No. 3 in offensive rebounds (3.1 orpg) and No. 7 in double-doubles (six).

Silas Demary Jr. was named SEC Player of the Week last Monday and a National Player of the Week last Tuesday after averaging 23.5 points in wins over No. 3 Florida and at Texas. He also is scoring at double-digit pace of 13.1 ppg the Bulldogs – including 19.3 ppg over the last eight games – and sports team-high averages of 3.1 apg, 1.7 spg and 31.3 mpg.

Blue Cain is contributing double figures in league play, upping his average of 8.2 ppg against non-conference competition by 2.0 ppg to 10.2 ppg versus SEC teams.
