9 to 5: The Musical set to debut at Swanson Center Mainstage Theater

By Logan Landers Anchor/Reporter

The Piedmont University Theatre Department will soon debut 9 to 5: The Musical.

With music written by Dolly Parton, this musical which is based on the 1980s movie, takes a comedic look at the role of women in the 1970’s workplace and imagines what would happen if women ruled the office.

The show follows frustrated employees Violet Newstead, Judy Bernly, and Doralee Rhodes as they are pushed to the limit by their boss Franklin Hart and decide a little revenge is in order.

9 to 5: The Musical will be performed Thurs., Fri. and Sat., Feb. 13-15, at 7:30 P.M. and Sun., Feb. 16, at 2:00 P.M. in the Swanson Center Mainstage Theater in Demorest, GA.

“9 To 5 holds a special place in my heart,” says director Kathy Blandin. First, who doesn’t love Dolly Parton’s music? Second, the lead character, Violet, could have been based on my mom. Just as Violet fights to break the glass ceiling at Consolidated, Inc., my mom struggled against the boys' club at Sharon Steel to become their first female computer programmer in the early 1980’s. At the time, my mom didn’t realize she was a feminist as a single mom she just wanted to better provide for her family. 9 To 5 is my way of celebrating women like Violet and my mom whose dogged determination is why all women today enjoy a better quality of life.”

General admission seating is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.

Admission is free for Piedmont University faculty, staff, and students.

Tickets may be purchased online or by calling the box office at 706-778-8500 x1355.
