The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office issued Friday a scam warning to residents.
A Facebook post from the department said the FCSO Financial Crimes Unit received reports of Task/Work From Home Scams, which usually send victims unsolicited text messages for a fake opportunity to make money by “reviewing products” or conducting “task optimization” at home. Suspects may also send targeted social media posts with similar information.
Victims of the scam are then directed to create what appears to be a work account and instructed to deposit funds to “charge” their account in order to review more products or complete other tasks. The department says suspects typically ask for crypto currency and communicate with victims through encrypted messenger apps such as WhatsApp or Telegram.
Once the victim sends the crypto currency to scammers, the money is gone and the victim is requested to send more and more money to complete more tasks or “pay taxes” in order to access earnings they never see.
The post urged residents to never pay someone for a job, never respond to unsolicited texts or advertisements and don’t trust those who say they will pay you to review a product.
