NEW ORLEANS — The Sugar Bowl matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff will kick off at 4 p.m. (ET) on Thursday.

The game, originally slated for 8:45 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, was moved on the heels of a terrorist attack on New Orleans early on New Year’s Day when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter. The driver was killed in a firefight with police following the attack at about 3:15 a.m. along Bourbon Street near Canal Street, the FBI said.

Sugar Bowl director Jeff Hundley, along with federal, state, and local officials, had initially stated the game would be postponed 24 hours.

The winner of the game will take on Penn State on Jan. 9 in Miami in the Orange Bowl. The Bulldogs have won four straight games in the CFP format since 2022, coming away with national titles in 2022 and 2023. They did not make the playoff field for the 2023-24 season.

The finals of the CFP Playoffs are scheduled for Jan. 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
