Another invasive species has prompted a warning from the state of Georgia with the focus, this time, surrounding snails found around Lake Lanier.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has recently issued a warning about the presence of invasive Chinese or Japanese Mystery Snails in Lake Lanier and other bodies of water across the state.
Jim Page, DNR Wildlife Resources Division Aquatic Nuisance Division Coordinator says in a DNR press release that boaters and fishermen are asked to help prevent the spread of these invasive snails by following guidelines to avoid introducing them into new waterbodies.
Page says the snail's presence in various US food markets as well as its popularity as a water pet prevents researches from determining exactly how the animal ended in the wildlife of this region.
Recent regulatory changes prohibit Georgians from having the Mystery Snails due to the potential ecological and economic consequences they could create within Georgia's waterways.
