Four area athletes nominated to Georgia HS Football HOF

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

The Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame has released its list of 100 nominees for the Class of 2024.

Four area players have made the list, with only one making their debut, Banks County’s Terry Allen. Allen is one of 40 first-time nominees this year.

Allen starred as a running back at Banks County in the mid-80s and played college football at Clemson. The Minnesota Vikings drafted him in the ninth round of the NFL Draft. From 1992 to 1996, he posted four 1,000-yard rushing seasons. In 1996, Allen led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 21. He also rushed for a career-high 1,353 yards with the Washington Redskins. Allen played for Washington, New England, New Orleans, and Baltimore. He finished his career with 8,614 rushing yards and 1,601 receiving yards and a combined 79 touchdowns.

Habersham Central receiver Tavares King, who played for the Raiders in the mid-2000s, returns to the ballot for the second time. He went on to star at the University of Georgia. King was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos and played five seasons in the NFL — Carolina, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, New York Giants and Minnesota.

Riverside Military’s Everett Strupper returns to the ballot for the third time. He played for the Eagles in the early 1900s. Also a three-time nominee is Commerce’s Runt Moon from 1973.

The AccessWDUN Sports coverage area currently has three members in the Hall of Fame: QB Billy Lothridge, Gainesville (1959), RB Monte Williams, Commerce (2000) and RB Darius Walker, Buford (2003)

The Hall of Fame board, comprised of 38 past and present coaches, players, administrators, and media members, will complete voting by the end of May and select a 30-member Class of 2024. The class is set to be inducted on Saturday, October. 26, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
