A driver faces charges in at least three counties after a brief chase in Habersham County Tuesday night.
Habersham County Public Information Officer Rob Moore said Gary James Gordon Parris, 38 was arrested after wrecking a Pontiac G8 while turning onto Hollywood Hills Road from Georgia 15 and then fleeing on foot.
A Habersham County Sheriff's Office deputy observed the Pontiac driving too fast for conditions and attempted to check for a valid license plate. The deputy said the car was missing a front bumper and appeared to be a project car.
Moore said the deputy attempted to get closer to the vehicle but it continued to move away from him at a high rate of speed.
The deputy activated his blue lights between Tom Arrendale Interchange and Antioch Church Road to attempt a traffic stop.
The driver tried to turn onto Antioch Church Road and lost control when he saw another deputy there.
Parris regained control and fled north on GA. 15 and abruptly turned right onto Hollywood Hills Road, had no traction and lost control on the wet pavement. The vehicle traveled onto the shoulder of the road and struck a rock column.
The deputy positioned his vehicle to keep Parris from fleeing.
Moore said Parris climbed over the red bumper in his car’s passenger seat and fled out the passenger door of the car. He then ran through the gate of a private home.
Deputies said Parris had a holster on that he continued to reach for. He allegedly fought with deputies before they deployed a Taser to bring him under control.
Parris was arrested and faces charges of felony fleeing or attempting to elude, obstruction of an officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving while license suspended or revoked, possession of methamphetamine and failure to maintain lane.
After taking Parris into custody deputies learned he he faces numerous outstanding charges in Stephens County, as well as warrants in White County and Habersham County.
He was taken to the Habersham County Detention Center in Clarkesville he remains there on a $17,645 bond.
