The body of a woman was found on Thursday behind Lake Herrick on the UGA campus.

UGA Police Department officials said they received a call at around 12:07 p.m. from a person concerned for the welfare of their friend who had gone on a run at the Intermural Fields earlier in the morning and had not returned.

Officers responded to the area around 12:20 p.m. and immediately began searching for the woman. Officers located the person in the forested area behind Lake Herrick at approximately 12:38 p.m.

UGA officials said the person was unconscious and not breathing and had visible injuries. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to the person.

When emergency medical responders arrived at the scene they determined the person was deceased.

The UGA Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department are actively investigating the incident.

UGA officials said foul play is suspected and classes are cancelled until Monday.

Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200.
