FBI identifies New Orleans suspect, Sugar Bowl postponed, UGA student injured after deadly attack

The Sugar Bowl between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame has been moved to a 4 p.m. kickoff on Thursday.

According to a statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the person behind the deadly incident in New Orleans Wednesday morning has reportedly been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas.

An ISIS flag was allegedly located on the vehicle, and the FBI is trying to determine the subject’s associations with terrorist organizations.

The FBI’s report states that at around 3:15 a.m. CST (4:15 a.m. ET), Jabbar drove a rented Ford pickup truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens of others. 

After hitting the crowd, Jabbar reportedly got out and fired upon local law enforcement.

Law enforcement fired back, and Jabbar was pronounced dead on the scene. Two local law enforcement officers were injured and transported to a local hospital.

Also, University of Georgia (UGA) president Jere Morehead released a statement on X stating that a UGA student was one of the dozens critically injured and is receiving medical treatment. 

“I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community,” Morehead said in the statement.

The Sugar Bowl also released a statement on X. In it, they said that the quarterfinal game originally scheduled for 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday between No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 2 UGA has been postponed until Thursday. 

No further details have been released as to when the game will be moved to.
