Wrestling: Area teams have solid showings at Sectionals; more than 100 advance to finals

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Chestatee piled up 86 points and placed seven of nine wrestlers in the top six to lead the Class 4A B Sectionals on Saturday at the Lynn Cottrell Center.

That was one of 14 Sectionals across the seven classifications of the Georgia High School Association on Saturday. The top six in each weight class advanced to next week's Traditional finals in Macon. Area wide, more than 100 individual wrestlers qualified for the finals.

As a team, the War Eagles were the top team, edging out North Oconee and North Hall and had two first placers and three seconds among the seven that advanced.

Also at the Lynn Cottrell Center, North Hall had six of eight move into the finals, including two firsts and two seconds and East Forsyth had all four of its wrestlers advance, with one first and two seconds. Johnson had two first place finishers and Cherokee Bluff had one move on to Macon.

Buford, meanwhile, placed all 14 wrestlers into the top six in the Class 7A Sectionals at Lambert, with eight coming away with first place finishes. The Wolves amassed a whopping 178 points, more than 100 points more than second place West Forsyth.

In the Class 6A Sectional at Brunswick, Jackson County sent eight of its 11 to Macon, NorthForsyth had six move on, Gainesville had three place, and Habersham Central had just one get to Macon.

Jefferson had eight of its 13 wrestlers advance to the finals, with six place finishers but no first, at the Flowery Branch.Sectional. The Falcons had four of 10 move on.

At Lumpkin County in a Class 3A Sectional, the host Indians sent 10 of 13 into the finals with one first place finisher and four seconds. White County had six of 11 advance with one first place and one second place finisher, Dawson County placed three in the top six with one first place and West Hall had both of its wrestlers advance.

In the Class 2A Sectional Rockmart, East Jackson had 10 of 13 advance to Macon, including four second place finishers. Banks County sent eight of 13 to Macon, also with four second place finishers and seven of 13 moved on for Union County, with one first and three second place showings.

In the Class A Sectional in Dublin, Commerce placed 11 in the finals with two first place finishers. Rabun County had five advance with one first pace and Towns County sent two to Macon.
