Winder Police Department warns of area phone scams

By AccessWDUN Staff

The Winder Police Department is warning residents of an ongoing phone scam in the area attempting to solicit money or personal information from residents.

The department has received reports of scammers claiming to be with the City of Winder asking for sensitive information. Officials said in a Facebook post this week the caller ID number sometimes appears to say “The City of Winder” to confuse targets.

Authorities reminded the public the City of Winder will never ask for information such as social security numbers, banking details or solicit payments over the phone. The post urged anyone who receives these calls to not provide personal details to the caller.

“We encourage all residents to remain vigilant,” the City of Winder said on its website. “If you believe you’ve been targeted by these scam calls, contact City Hall immediately at (770) 867-3106, or stop by in person to speak with one of our representatives at the customer service center downtown. “
