Softball: Graham's grand slam leads Bears to win; Buford's Stanton records perfect game

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Audrey Graham's grand slam in the sixth inning pushed Cherokee Bluff into the lead for good in a 16-11 win over Commerce at home on Monday.

Graham smashed the home run to center field, scoring Quinn Kiewart, Kaitlyn Benitez and Claire Carlson.

M Warren added an insurance home run on the next at-bat.

Grahm was 1-for-3 with four RBIs. Kate Herren was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Jaycee Archer added two RBIs, and Mac Warren, Kiewert and Carlson had one RBI each. Carlson also homered in the second inning. 

Commerce tied the game in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs on six hits. Camden Thomason brought in a run on a fielder's choice; Brooklyn Harbin singled, scoring one run; Kaylee Purvis singled, scoring two runs; Mcvay doubled, scoring two runs; and Dean doubled, scoring one run.

Purvis led the Tigers with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

On Monday, Caroline Stanton tossed her third-career perfect game over Marist at the Buford Softball Complex.

She also struck out 12 batters in 5 innings of work.

Meanwhile, Buford's were on fire, belting 12 hits in only five innings. Four of those hits went for extra bases. Buford (22-1, 11-0 Region 8-6A) scored four runs in the 1st inning off of 4 singles, two doubles, and a walk.

Izzy Rettiger made the score 6-0 in the 4th inning with a bunt single that scored teammates Janie Goldin and Ella Pierce Hensley. After Summer Castorri hit her third double of the night, Kadyn Gabrels drove her in with a line drive single down the left field line. In the 5th inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Castorri hit a fly ball to right field that was misplayed by the Marist fielder, allowing two runs to score and ending the game due to the run rule. 

Castorri was 3-for-4 with 3 doubles, RBI, 2 runs scored. Rettiger was 2-for-3, with 2 RBIs, 1 run scored, 1 stolen base.  Goldin was 2-for-3, with an RBI, 2 runs scored, 4 stolen bases, and Addie Rackley was 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, 1 run scored

On Tuesday, Buford will end the regular season on the road at Mountain View. Game time is set for 5:55 p.m.
